EyeSouth Partners Suffers Preventable Breach
Early this February, Georgia-based EyeSouth Partners began notifying more than 24,000 patients that their protected health information was most likely compromised due to a cyber intrusion into the organization's email system. That breach was discovered last October and during the investigation, officials determined the unauthorized access began more than a month earlier. Google Releases Password Checkup Plug-in for Chrome
Back in the good old days, when massive security breaches were few and far between, you didn't have to worry so much about your email address being leaked online. Now that small and large businesses are being hacked with almost routine occurrence, you must pay close attention to the security of your email address and other credentials. Google's new Password Checkup plug-in for Chrome can help. When it detects that you've logged into a site whose data has been compromised, a message will alert you that your information may be in danger. Google is said to have archived more than four billion credentials that it says have been compromised. If you don't use Chrome, you can always manually see if your user name and password has been compromised and leaked online, using the Hasso Plattner Institute’s Identity Leak Checker or HaveIBeenPwned.

Nest Says Nest Cams Were Not Hacked
Despite the fact that some families have shocking accounts of people communicating with them through their Nest Cams, Nest informed its clients that its network is safe. In an email they sent out, Nest said the following: "We're reaching out to assure you that Nest security has not been breached or compromised."
The reason hackers were able to access some but not all Nest cams is that some customers used email addresses and passwords that have already been breached via other breaches and have been released online to the hacker community at large. This is yet another reason why it's important to 1/know if your email has been compromised (see the News article above), 2/change it if it has been leaked and 3/use a password manager to create and manage complex passwords that are unique to every site you visit (see the January newsletter).
