Apple Refuses Government Order to Unlock iPhone
You may have heard in the news that the FBI has asked Apple to unlock the iPhone used by one of the shooters in the San Bernardino shootings. They have declined, and here is part of Apple's explanation for refusing this order. "We have great respect for the professionals at the FBI, and we believe their intentions are good. Up to this point, we have done everything that is both within our power and within the law to help them. But now the U.S. government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create. They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone. Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software — which does not exist today — would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone's physical possession." Read the full letter here.

Microsoft Looks Under the Sea for the Future of Computing

If someone asked you where you thought the future of computing might lie, you probably would not suggest the bottom of the ocean. Yet that's exactly where researchers at Microsoft are looking. In fact, the company has recently tested an innovative data center that is located hundreds of feet below sea level, The New York Times reports. Why you may ask? Data centers normally spend enormous amounts of money on air-conditioning to keep the servers from overheating. By building a data center under water, it's possible to use the cold ocean water to keep servers cool.
